SPED6230: Emotional & Behavioral Supports
Teachers will learn about addressing student behaviors that interfere with learning and evidence based strategies to support students in school. Key topics include challenging behaviors in children and adolescents, classroom supports and interventions, behavior interventions within Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), behavioral analysis and data collection methods, and the impact of adverse childhood experiences.

Prerequisite: SPED6220

In order to receive a passing grade, the participant must complete all course assignments
Grade Distribution:
Critical Thinking Assignments: 60%
Short Answer Discussion Assignments: 30%
Final Assignment: 10%

PTI (Progressive Teaching Initiative) course pedagogy combines brief bits of direct instruction on a topic with formative assessments questions designed to help students construct deeper knowledge as they solve increasingly complicated problems together in groups. There are three major sets of problems to solve:

formative assessment problems built into a SMART notebook presentation and linked to student polling devices

accompanying classwork and homework problems

labs and virtual activities

Module 6: Behavioral Assessments and Interventions
This module discusses behavioral assessments and interventions that can be used for students who do not respond to Tier I or II supports.

Review the lesson (either in PPT or PDF, both file formats are posted but the presentations are the same) before completing the module assignments.

Students will recognize and understand when to begin a Functional Behavioral Assessment.
Students will understand the components and steps involved in implementing a Functional Behavior Assessment to create a Behavior Intervention Plan.
Students will understand fidelity, implementation and monitoring of a Behavior Intervention Plan.
